Leverich Canyon

(Cedar Stain Preservation)

Background: This home in south Bozeman features cedar siding and decks. Cedar is a beautiful and rot-resisting building material, but it needs to be properly maintained to preserve the aesthetic appeal. Penetrating oil stains are an excellent choice when it comes to preserving cedar siding from water and UV damage, and that was our best course of action here. When we showed up, the south and west sides of the home were completely exposed to the direct sun and had obvious wood bleaching and decay. The cracks in the deck were filled with moist foliage and debris.

Process: We started this project by making sure all surfaces were first cleared of debris then thoroughly washed. Our crew masked off all of the windows, doors, gutters, fixtures, etc. to avoid any stain over-spray or drips.  The home owner wanted us to match the original color as best as possible, so we provided a few different color options of high-quality, oil-based penetrating stain. We applied the selected stain onto the lap siding and cedar shake using airless sprayers to get the product onto the wall. We then immediately worked the oil into the wood grain with a block brush. Brushing the stain into the wood is imperative to achieve a uniform, long-lasting, and fully-sealed finish. We finished out the job by staining the deck and painting the trim in a color that complimented the cedar siding. While staining the deck, we were careful to make sure all mold and debris was power washed and scraped out of the cracks to ensure the deck would drain water and last as long as possible. As always, we conducted a thorough round of touch-ups and cleaning before we got the stamp of approval from another satisfied customer.
